Below are some stills of muzzle flashes found in some different films. This is comparing "apples and oranges" such as M16 to a MG42, so take that into account. The truth of the matter is muzzle flashes are very Hollywood, youtube some gun footage and count how many muzzle flashes you see.... not many. BUT, we're making a movie!

Over all not many muzzle flashes and much smaller then modern films.
